ST. LOUIS • A pedestrian was struck and killed by a trucker in the 9900 block of Riverview Drive early Wednesday, police say.

Mario Rowell, 42, of St. Louis, was fatally injured at about 12:15 a.m. on Riverview.

The truck driver, 52, told police that he was driving south on Riverview when he saw an object in the road. The object was the man, who suddenly stood up and tried to avoid being hit. But he couldn't get out of the way in time, and the tractor-trailer hit him.

Police aren't sure why Rowell had been lying in the road. Rowell was taken to an area hospital, where he died. Rowell lived in the 4600 block of Alaska Avenue.
