ST. LOUIS • Three people were taken into custody Saturday in downtown St. Louis during a show of support for LGBTQ issues.
Edward Pingleton, 19, of Kyle Court in Columbia, Mo., and Aideen O'Brien, 21, of Hammel Avenue in Webster Groves, were arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault and resisting/interfering with arrest
Amelia Maxwell, 22, of Jones Way, Wood River, Ill. was arrested and received city summonses for interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest and was released.
The arrests happened during the afternoon just as the group was getting ready to conclude the march that ended behind the Old Court House. One of the organizers, Aaron Laxton, said at least 1,500 people participated in the rally.
Court documents allege that about 300 protesters continued on after the planned protest concluded. Some marched in the streets, causing traffic concerns, according to the documents.
As officers tried to get protesters out of the middle of the streets, Pingleton balled up his fist and swung at an officer from behind, according to court documents.
Other officers intervened and tried to arrest Pingleton, and he flailed his body and refused to put his hands behind his back, according to the documents.
Police say O'Brien jumped on top of a police officer to try to stop him from arresting another person, and then flailed her body and refused to put her hands behind her back during her arrest, according to court documents.
