ST. LOUIS • A woman riding in a car with her mother late Thursday night died after she grabbed the car's steering wheel and the car crashed, flipping three times on Interstate 70, police say.

Desiree Williams, 22, died at the scene of the crash just before 11 p.m. Thursday. It happened on westbound I-70 at Salisbury Avenue. Williams lived in the 3800 block of Oakridge Avenue in St. Louis County.

Williams' 41-year-old mother was driving, police say. She was still hospitalized on Friday morning. Police say she is in police custody but didn't say why. Her name has not been released.

Police say the mother told them that her daughter grabbed the steering wheel while the two apparently quarreled in the car. The car hit a concrete median and flipped. The daughter was thrown from the car and landed in the left lane of traffic.

Two cars ran over Williams, police say. The driver of the second car stopped and cooperated with police. The first car that hit Williams did not stop, police say.
