ST. LOUIS • A man who was trying to retrieve something from the interstate after it fell off his truck was struck and killed just before noon Monday.

Clarence F. Davis, 57, of East Prairie, Mo., was trying to retrieve an item from the northbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Park Avenue at 11:55 a.m. Monday when he was struck by an SUV. Davis died at a hospital.

Police did not say what item Davis was trying to get.

The woman, 54, who was driving the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

An accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash. Traffic was jammed as authorities worked to investigate and clear the crash. The road reopened about 2:45 p.m. Monday.
