OLIVETTE   •   An Olivette man has been charged with beating his girlfriend with a wooden bed post and leading police on a chase that ended in a crash.

Bradley A. Cowan, 21, of the 9000 block of Olive Boulevard, was charged Saturday with domestic assault and resisting arrest. He is jailed in lieu of a $50,000 cash bail.

Olivette police say about 4 p.m. Saturday, Cowan attacked his girlfriend in their apartment, then dropped her off at work and left in her car. Coworkers saw she was injured and called for an ambulance. Police were called, and officers went to the couple's apartment.

As Cowan returned to the apartment, he spotted Olivette police cars there and he sped off, police said. Police chased Cowan for a short distance, and Cowan hit another vehicle before crashing his girlfriend's car.

Cowan was treated at a hospital and released to police custody. His girlfriend is expected to be OK.

Additional charges were pending Monday against Cowan, police said.
