ST. LOUIS COUNTY   •   A man from north St. Louis County was being held Monday in lieu of $250,000 bail after police say he used a brick or landscaping stone to bludgeon his drinking buddy to death.

Arthur L. Cooper, 64, was arrested Saturday night outside his home in the 2100 block of Rountree Drive. He was charged Sunday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Police say he killed Harvey Raspberry, 58.

Raspberry and Cooper had been drinking at the residence they shared on Rountree when they got into an altercation, police say.

At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, they took the fight outside, and witnesses called police when they saw the fight near the intersection of Redman Avenue and Fox Hall Lane.

St. Louis County police officers arrived to find Raspberry on the ground, fatally beaten, in the side yard of the residence on Rountree. Paramedics pronounced Raspberry dead at the scene at 9 p.m.

Cooper was "staggering away slowly" from the scene and police arrested him, a police report says. What sparked their dispute isn't clear. Cooper did not talk to police about what had happened, said County Police Officer Randy Vaughn.

Police say Raspberry's previous address was in the 4000 block of East Margaretta Avenue near Fairgound Park in St. Louis.

Cooper made an initial court appearance in St. Louis County on Monday morning.
