ST. LOUIS • City police say they arrested a man early today who refused to come out a Family Dollar store that he had tried to rob.

Dwayne A. Jefferson, 19, of Kansas City, Kan., was charged Wednesday afternoon with first-degree robbery, kidnapping and two counts of armed criminal action.

Witnesses told police the man came into the store at 4344 Martin Luther King Drive shortly after midnight. One of the store's employees escaped and called police. After officers surrounded the store, the man saw police and refused to come out.

The store closed at 8 p.m. but some employees were there doing some work overnight.

After a standoff with police, Jefferson surrendered peacefully about 2 a.m. Police recovered a pistol and a bag of cash and cigarettes taken from the business.

Police said Jefferson is wanted in several robberies in Kansas City.
