ST. LOUIS • The death of a woman this month from carbon monoxide poisoning has prompted a giveaway of 150 carbon monoxide detectors that firefighters are offering to install for free for city residents.

On Friday, Capt. Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department said First Alert donated the detectors and that city firefighters will install them for anyone who calls the Fire Department at 314-289-1905.

Sutter said the giveaway is in response to the Feb. 11 incident in the 3900 block of St. Louis Avenue. Delphine Gray, 34, the mother of 10 children, died and a man was in critical condition after they were overcome by carbon monoxide from a gas-powered generator used inside a four-family flat. Sutter said several children also were taken to a hospital for treatment.
