EDWARDSVILLE • Three women face charges in Madison County that they stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from two elderly women.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted Collinsville-area residents Romayne Y. Pike, 80, and her daughter Diane M. Moore, 53, on two counts each of financial exploitation of an elderly person.

Stephanee Smith, spokeswoman for the Madison County state's attorney's office, said the two were cousins of the 91-year-old victim and had held power of attorney for her since 2005. Police believe they unlawfully took more than $462,000 from her and spent it on various items since 2005.

In a separate case, the grand jury handed up an indictment charging 63-year-old Marjorie L. Phelps of the 11400 block of Pocahontas Road near Marine with financial exploitation of an elderly person, financial exploitation of a disabled person and theft over $100,000.

Phelps allegedly stole more than $290,000 from a 64-year-old woman who had moved in with her in 2003. Smith said Phelps held power of attorney for the victim.

Each of the alleged offenses are punishable by prison terms of four to 15 years. The suspects had not been arrested as of Thursday afternoon.
