EDWARDSVILLE • A man and woman from the Granite City area were charged Tuesday with drug-induced homicide in the death of a 48-year-old man they allegedly provided fentanyl, a powerful opiate that is prescribed for severe pain.
The suspects are Cory L. Armbruster, 28, of the 4200 block of Division Street, and Becky M. Chandler, 30, of the first block of University Drive. Prosecutors allege the drug caused the death of William J. Smith at his residence in the 4200 block of Division Street near Granite City on Nov. 28.
Armbruster and Chandler were charged on Dec. 1 with unlawful delivery of the drug. An autopsy and later toxicological testing showed that Smith died of acute fentanyl intoxication.
Madison County sheriff's Lt. Mike Dixon said detectives found empty fentanyl packaging in Smith's home and learned that Armbruster provided the drug to Smith. Dixon said further investigation showed that Armbruster had purchased the drug from Chandler several days earlier.
The suspects were free on bail following their arrest on the earlier charges. A judge set bail of $100,000 on each of the new charges.
