EDWARDSVILLE • A 23-year-old woman from Wood River could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday of aggravated DUI in connection with a fatal crash in 2010.
Brittney Rhea Butler was the driver of a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood that slammed into the rear of a semi-trailer rig on Illinois Route 143 as it slowed to turn onto Bender Road about 4:45 a.m. on Oct. 22, 2010.
Butler had only minor injuries but a passenger, 35-year-old Jeffrey L. Davis of Edwardsville, was killed.
Madison County Assistant State's Attorney Chris Hoell said State Police found no skid marks. He said police could not determine how fast the car was going but found the speedometer stuck at 80 mph. Hoell said Butler's blood-alcohol level was 0.162 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
In return for Butler's guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to ask for no more than a 10-year prison sentence when she is sentenced later. The normal sentencing range is three to 14 years.
Butler could also face an additional four years in prison if her probation is revoked on two felony drug convictions in 2009 but might serve that time concurrently. She was charged with DUI in 2007 but pleaded guilty of a reduced charge of reckless driving.
