District begins search for new superintendent

TROY SCHOOLS • The search for a new superintendent is beginning in the school district in Troy, Mo. Current Superintendent Terry Morrow announced last month he is retiring.

Morrow, 53, has spent 33 years in public education. This is his sixth year as superintendent of the school district in Troy.

The search for a replacement will begin with an online survey of the community. Residents are asked to visit www.troy.k12.mo.us to suggest the qualities they would like to see in the next superintendent. For those without computer access, paper copies of the survey will be available at all schools, the public library and the central office.

The application deadline for the superintendent position is Oct. 15. The board hopes to appoint a new superintendent in December, with the new hire beginning July 1.

HAZELWOOD SCHOOLS > District invites residents to meet new superintendent • The Hazelwood School District is inviting parents and community members to one of three meetings with new superintendent Steve Price. The meetings are scheduled for Sept. 16 in the Hazelwood Central High School library; Sept. 20 in the Hazelwood East High School library; and Sept. 21 in the Hazelwood West High School library. All meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Price assumed the role of superintendent on July 1. He most recently served as the superintendent for seven years in Middletown City Schools, a district of about 7,000 students in Ohio.

FRANCIS HOWELL SCHOOLS > Journalism program receives press freedom award • The journalism program at Francis Howell North High School has been awarded the Journalism Education Association First Amendment Press Freedom Award.

The high school was one of only three schools in the country to receive the honor.

Superintendent Pam Sloan recognized journalism teacher Aaron Manfull, along with several students, at a school board meeting last week.

The school has had a journalism program since the school opened almost 25 years ago. The program has been honored several times in the past six years.

The journalism program produces four news products: North Star newsmagazine, Excalibur yearbook, FHNtodayTV and FHNtoday.com.

COLLEGE FAIRS > Two events open to prospective college students • Students in the region will have two opportunities the next few weeks to meet recruiters from colleges and universities across the country.

The North County College Fair will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Pattonville High School gymnasium. More than 80 colleges and universities are expected to be represented. The event is open to students from the Pattonville, Ritenour and Ferguson-Florissant districts, as well as those who attend North County Tech.

University City High School will host an additional college fair from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the high school's gymnasium. Representatives from more than 70 schools from 11 states are expected. No registration is required and the event is open to students from all St. Louis area high schools. For more information, call 314-290-4016.

MARQUETTE CATHOLIC HIGH > School launches $3 million campaign • Marquette Catholic High School in Alton has announced a campaign to raise $3 million for campus upgrades as well as for increasing enrollment and enhancing the school's endowment fund. The campaign is Marquette's first since the 1970s.

Projects to be funded by the money include the modernization of classrooms, math and science labs and gymnasium facilities, energy upgrades and the create of an "Alumni Hall" for students.

The capital campaign was announced by the Marquette Catholic High School Foundation, which was established in 2007. A gift of approximately $854,000 from the Diocese of Springfield Harvest of Hope Campaign is serving as a catalyst for the campaign.

ROCKWOOD SCHOOLS > Counselor named state's best • Cathy Westbury, a school counselor at Stanton Elementary, has been selected as the Elementary School Counselor of the Year for the state of Missouri.

The Missouri School Counselor Association honors one elementary, middle and high school counselor each year as the top school counselors in the state. The winners will be honored at the annual conference of the Missouri School Counselor Association in November.
