Contributors today added a total of $40,000 to the campaign chests of two candidates for the Republican nomination for state senator from the 26th District -- the last day before the primary.
A campaign committee for state House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin, donated $25,000 to state Rep. Brian Nieves, R-Washington area, one of four candidates in the race. Former Washington Mayor Dick Stratman, a candidate in the race, received $15,000 from Herzog Contracting Co. of St. Joseph, Mo.
The information was on statements Nieves and Stratman filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission.The district covers Franklin County and the Wildwood and Eureka areas of St. Louis County.
State law requires Nieves to file a statement Monday about the contribution from Richards because it was more than $5,000. Stratman had to file a statement because state law requires and
candidates and supporters of propositions to file a statement within 48 hours when they receive a contribution of more than $250 in the last 11 days before the election.
Two candidates in the race, former State Rep. Jack Jackson, R-Wildwood, and Don Meyer of Labadie, did not file anything with the ethics commission today.
In the latest campaign reports that listed both contributions and spending, Nieves reporting raising $231,827 thus far and Stratman, $133,559 thus far. The two filed those reports on July 26.
Jackson, R-Wildwood, then reported raising $149,490 thus far. Meyer on July 26 filed two reports: one to meet the eight-day before the election requirement and the other to meet the 30-day after the election one. In the latter report, Meyer said he raised $8,429.
