WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House took up some issues this week near and dear to Rep. Todd Akin, approving an additional $33 billion for the Afghanistan war and defeating legislation to remove U.S. military personnel from Pakistan.
But Akin, R-Town & Country, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, wasn't in D.C. voting because of hip surgery in St. Louis on Monday.
Akin, 63, a tennis player and former marathoner, came through the surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital fine and intends to be back on the House floor Congress returns from its August recess after Labor Day, Akin's spokesman said.
The spokesman, Steve Taylor, said the five-term congressman had hoped to be in Washington for the last week of Congress before recess but went ahead with the surgery to meet his surgeon's vacation schedule.
