JEFFERSON CITY -- Hollywood producer Gavin Polone wants Missouri voters to raise the standards for raising puppies in the state.
So does former Time Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Reginald Brack of Greenwich, Conn.
Each man contributed $5,000 yesterday to Missourians for the Protection of Dogs, the committee campaigning for Proposition B on the November ballot.
Polone's credits include "Panic Room" and the hit TV series, "Gilmore Girls." His production company is called Pariah. Brack was chairman of Time from 1986 to 1994.
Prop B would require anyone who has more than 10 breeding dogs to meet certain standards for housing, food and veterinary care. Owners would be limited to no more than 50 breeding dogs.
Missourians for the Protection of Dogs circulated petitions to get the initiative on the ballot. The coalition consists of the Humane Society of Missouri, the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States.
That's where the big money is coming from -- for example, $500,000 last month from the Humane Society of the United States and $200,000 from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
A spokeswoman for Missourians for the Protection of Dogs said the committee also has received more than 1,600 individual donations from Missourians.
Dog breeders contend the regulations are unnecessary and will drive half the 1,477 licensed breeders out of business. So far, two committees opposing the amendment have reported about $12,612 in donations.
