ST. LOUIS -- A GOP backed organization is placing television ads in Missouri criticizing Democratic Senate candidate Robin Carnahan for her support of federal health care legislation passed by Congress earlier this year.

AP has the story:

WASHINGTON (AP) — An independent political group devoted to helping Republican candidates is spending more than $2 million for television ads in Nevada and Missouri that criticize Democratic Senate candidates.

The ads are part of an escalating media campaign by Crossroads GPS and its affiliated American Crossroads. The groups were created under the tutelage of GOP masterminds Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie, one-time aides to former President George W. Bush.

The ads target Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who is running for re-election in Nevada, and Democrat Robin Carnahan, who is running for the Senate in Missouri against Republican Rep. Roy Blunt.

Earlier this week Crossroads also purchased $425,000 in ad time in Colorado against Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.

As long as Crossroads GPS does not directly advocate the election or defeat of any candidate in the race, federal law does not require it to disclose its donors. American Crossroads, created under a separate section of election law, must report its donors.

As of Friday, both groups together had raised $17.6 million since they were created in March, according to spokesman Jonathan Collegio. The groups are aiming to spend more than $50 million collectively before the November elections.
