KEY HOUSE VOTES
Voting 247-161 against, the House on Aug. 10 sent President Barack Obama a deficit-neutral, $26 billion aid package for school districts and state treasuries. The bill (HR1586) appropriates $10 billion to save the jobs of more than 100,000 teachers facing layoffs and $16 billion to help states pay Medicaid claims. The Medicaid funding will free up state resources for retaining tens of thousands of public employees. The bill pays for itself by making cuts elsewhere in the budget, such as in Food Stamps, and by closing a loophole used by multinational corporations to reduce U.S. taxes.
