MACOUPIN COUNTY • A man from Gillespie has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the November death of his 3-month-old daughter.
Richard C. Morgan Jr., 27, is jailed in Macoupin County on one count of involuntary manslaughter.
His daughter, Nevaeh, suffocated Nov. 23 after her father stuck a baby wipe in her mouth, said Master Sgt. Dave Wasmuth of the Illinois State Police. Wasmuth said he didn't know why Morgan allegedly did that.
Morgan later found her struggling to breathe, alerted a relative in the house, and called 911, police said. An ambulance took Nevaeh to St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, where she died.
The investigation began after hospital staff notified police of the child's death.
Morgan was jailed Tuesday in lieu of a $100,000 bail. If convicted, Morgan could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.
