ST. CLAIR COUNTY • Charges have been filed against the adoptive mother of a boy at Scott Air Force Base who was beaten, ordered to do 700 push-ups, and forced to eat crumbs and loose screws off the kitchen floor.

Lasawn M. Jennings, 39, was charged Saturday in St. Clair County Circuit Court with a misdemeanor count of endangering the life of a child. She was being held in the St. Clair County Jail on $20,000 bond. Authorities said the incident happened between 2 and 5 a.m. Thursday.

Police began investigating after the boy reported the incident to a nurse at Scott Elementary School. The boy’s stepfather, James P. Jennings, 39, was charged Friday on several counts, and remained in the St. Clair County jail on $400,000 bond. The 12-year-old boy was the only child at the house in the 4500 block of Split Rock Drive when the incident happened.
