A 31-year-old inmate at the St. Charles County jail hanged herself with a bed sheet late Monday night, county officials reported today.
The woman, Annie Wilson of Florissant, was being held on warrants for writing bad checks. She had been at the jail since early Saturday.
According to county spokesperson John Sonderegger, Wilson had been sharing a cell. When her roommate was in the rec room watching television, Wilson wrapped a sheet around her neck and tied it to a rung of the ladder attached to the bunk bed.
Her roommate returned to the cell about 10:30 p.m. and discovered her.
Sonderegger said Wilson originally was from Idaho. She is separated from her husband and is the mother of four children, he said.
Wilson's suicide is the first one at the jail since April 2009. At that time, the jail opened a new cellblock for suicidal inmates after five deaths happened there in less than three years.
Sonderegger said Wilson had been evaluated when she was booked into the jail, and was not considered a suicide threat.
