St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, a Democrat, and Bill Corrigan, his Republican rival, spent more money than they collected in the last days before the Aug. 3 primary and the first days of the campaign leading up to the Nov. 2 general election, their campaign finance reports show.
Dooley raised $77,974 and spent $127,360 in the reporting period of July 23 through Aug. 28. Corrigan collected $31,045 and spent $58,615 at the same time.
They and other candidates in the primary filed campaign finance reports Thursday with the Missouri Ethics Commission, as state law requires 30 days after the election.
Dooley said he has $1,016,312 available for the general election campaign. Corrigan reported having $543,556 in his campaign chest.
Dooley, a Democrat, reported raising $2,190,291 and spending $1,062,509 thus far.
Developer Michael Staenberg, president of THF Inc. donated to the campaign. Other contributors were Ameren Services, Anheuser Busch Cos. Inc., Boeing, the CH2M Hill planning and engineering company and the Thompson Coburn law firm. County Counselor Patricia Redington made a donation.
Political action committees for the Local 655 of the food and commercial workers union, the state council of the service workers union and several construction skilled trades unions contributed.
Dooley spent $50,000 for a video that Devine-Mulvey Inc. of Washington, D.C. produced. Most of the other expenses were for campaign workers and miscellaneous items.
Corrigan reported raising $1,128,339 and spending $543,634 thus far.
Among donors to Corrigan were the Republican Circle of Webster Groves and the political action committee for St. Louis Realtors.
Much of Corrigan's spending went to Axiom Strategies of Kansas City for campaign consulting, Dresner, Wickers Associates LLC of San Francisco for media and the Tarrance Group of Alexandria, Va., for a poll.
Theo "Ted" Brown Sr. of Riverview, the Libertarian candidate, said he would not raise or spend more than $500 in his campaign.
In the contested race for council member from the 3rd District, Councilwoman Colleen Wasinger, R-Town and Country, has raised $29,075 and spent $5,291 thus far. She collected $8,250 and spent $167 in the reporting period.
Robert "Bob" Nelson, a Democratic from Kirkwood who is a former trustee of the St. Louis Community College District, reported raising $4,550 and spending $2,935 thus far. He collected $2,950 and spent $2,684 in the reporting period.
Contributing to Wasinger's campaign were developers JHB Properties Inc., Freeman Homes LLC and McBride and Son Homes. Her spending was for miscellaneous items.
Nelson received contributions from Phil Jackson, head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers professional basketball team, and from the Missouri Petroleum Products Co. Nelson listed three expenses to three companies without saying what they did or sold.
Funding raising and spending was greater in the 5th council district which has an open seat. The district's representative, Council Chairwoman Barbara Fraser, D-University City, is running for state senator from the 24th District.
Patrick Dolan, the Democratic candidate who is a former Richmond Heights councilman, has raised $69,109 and spent $55,607 thus far. In the reporting period he collected $8,050 and spent $3,260. John Eilerman, chief executive officer of McBride and Son donated to his campaign. Most of his spending was to a campaign consultant, Ronny Richardson & Associates of Clayton.
Dr. Randy Jotte, the Republican candidate who served on the Webster Groves City Council, has raised $97,352 and spent $31,031 thus far. He collected $3,895 and spent $2,902 in the reporting period. An executive of the McBride and Son Management Co. donated to his campaign as did Schnuck Markets Inc. and Casey General Stores. Most of his spending went to his campaign manager, Jennifer Tyler of Swansea.
