CHESTERFIELD • Residents may no longer use air rifles to rid their property of squirrels — or any other varmint. The Chesterfield City Council voted 6-2 Monday night to ban the discharge of firearms or other projectiles — "to protect crops or other property from squirrels, rodents, birds or other small animals" — within 150 yards of a residence. The maximum penalty for violators is a $1,000 fine. The issue arose after neighbors of former council member Gene Schenberg complained he was shooting squirrels with an air rifle. Schenberg said the ordinance is unconstitutional, but he will respect it, "at least until it's invalidated." He said he will instead use a BB gun, which, he said, the city has indicated is OK. City Attorney Robert Heggie, however, said the city will ban any weapon capable of inflicting serious injury or death. Any BB gun will be checked. "There are over 200 different types of BB guns," Heggie said.
