A second Iowa egg producer announced Friday that it was voluntarily recalling millions of eggs, adding to the 380 million eggs already recalled in recent days by another Iowa-based producer.
Hillandale Farms said Friday that it was recalling the eggs because of possible contamination of salmonella. The company's eggs were distributed in 14 states, including Missouri and Illinois.
Earlier this week, Wright County Egg announced it was expanding its voluntary recall to 380 million eggs, after announcing an initial recall last week. The company's eggs were distributed in 17 states, including Missouri and Illinois.
Retailers in the St. Louis area, including Schnucks, Dierbergs and Whole Foods, said they do not carry eggs covered by any of the recalls and that eggs distributed in this area typically do not come from Iowa producers.
The brands covered by the recalls are: Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, Sunny Meadow, Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
Health officials in Illinois and Missouri said there had been no reported, related cases of salmonellosis in either state as of Friday. Federal authorities believe the eggs could be responsible for 1,000 or more illnesses.
Symptoms of the illness caused by salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, fever, headache and chills. The illness can be fatal in rare cases, particular among the elderly and very young. An estimated 600 people die each year from salmonella infection.
Symptoms usually appear about 12 to 36 hours after exposure, and usually last up to a week.
