ST. LOUIS -- A fire at a home in the 5200 block of Wilson Avenue that killed two people last week was caused by discarded smoking materials, the fire department said.

The fire's cause has been ruled accidental. Clifford P. Washburn, 46, and Allison Garcia, 38, died of smoke inhalation in the Aug. 24 blaze, Capt. Michael Pickett said. The two were found inside the home Aug. 25 after the fire burned itself out.

Pickett said the home did not have functioning smoke detectors.
