Officials on Friday held a ceremony at a former furniture display store and warehouse at 10521 Baur Boulevard to mark the beginning of the structure's conversion into St. Louis County's new animal shelter.
Hof Construction Inc. of St. Louis, the lowest of five bidders for the job, will start work Tuesday on the $4.5 million project, which should be completed next summer.
The shelter in Olivette would more than double the space available for cats and dogs, provide an environment that encourages pet adoptions and include space for vector control offices, officials said.
It would replace shelters in Ladue and unincorporated north St. Louis County near Florissant.
