Carl Jones, 52, of Florissant, was one of two people killed in a seven-vehicle pile up on Interstate 57 in Franklin County, Illinois State Police said Friday.
Randy Reynolds, 54, of Herrin, Ill., was also killed in the accident near West Frankfort, which involved four semitrailers and three passenger vehicles.
State Police said Jones was driving a semitrailer carrying vehicle batteries northbound on I-57 near West Frankfort when he failed to stop for traffic that was slowed because of construction. Jones' semitrailer hit another semitrailer stopped in traffic.
The truck operated by Reynolds, which police described as an asphalt dump truck, failed to stop and ran into Jones' vehicle. Another asphalt dump truck also failed to stop and hit Reynolds' vehicle.
State Police said Jones' vehicle caught fire, and the blaze spread to other vehicles. The occupants of the three passenger vehicles involved in the pileup had minor injuries. Charges are pending, according to State Police.
