ST. LOUIS • More troubles for servicemen visiting St. Louis.
Police are trying to find the source of an apparent stray bullet that struck a 19-year-old soldier from Fort Leonard Wood as he was leaving the St. Louis Cardinals game with fellow soldiers Saturday night.
The bullet did not penetrate the soldier's clothes, but the impact drew a small amount of blood.
The uniformed soldier was waiting to board a bus about 9 p.m. in a parking lot in the 800 block of Cerre Street near Busch Stadium when he felt a "thud" to his shoulder, police said.
On Thursday, Jeff Maddy, a Fort Leonard Wood spokesman, identified the soldier as Nicholas J. Cordeiro, a member of the 3rd Chemical Brigade.
Cordeiro was treated and had X-rays of his shoulder at St. Louis University Hospital for a minor graze wound and released, authorities said. Investigators believe the bullet came from "errant gunfire that occurred away from the area."
After treatment, Cordeiro returned to duty, Maddy said.
Police say neither the victim nor witnesses heard or saw anyone firing a gun nearby.
Police recovered a bullet at the scene but were not sure whether it was the same bullet that hit the soldier.
Maddy said about 200 servicemen and women attended Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Braves for a U.S. military appreciation night.
A Cardinals spokesman said it was "Fort Leonard Wood Night" at the ballpark, an event the organization has held for 20 years.
Maddy said he, too, attended the game and left in another vehicle about the same time but heard nothing about a stray bullet hitting a soldier.
The incident "appears to be a very strange, unexplainable event with no clear ending or long-term effects for any party," Maddy said in an email.
In June, three members of the Marine Corps visiting St. Louis for a recruiting event called Marine Week, told police they were mugged by two men on a downtown street. The incident sparked controversy when Jeff Rainford, the mayor's chief of staff, questioned the victims' story. Rainford later apologized for his comments.
