ST. LOUIS • The nation's first and second ladies will be in St. Louis to attend Wednesday's World Series opener and to draw attention to efforts to help military families, Major League Baseball announced Monday.
"We are honored to have First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden join us for the 2011 Fall Classic to recognize the courageous men and women who serve the country as well as their families," Bud Selig, the baseball commissioner, said in a prepared statement.
Before the game, Obama and Biden will join Red Schoendienst, the Cardinals Hall of Famer, at the St. Louis VA Medical Center for a military-family appreciation event.
The women are promoting Joining Forces, a national initiative to provide jobs, improved education and other support to military spouses and children.
Major League Baseball is supporting a similar effort called Welcome Back Veterans. That program, which has awarded more than $11 million to charities in recent years, is intended to help returning veterans and their family members as they transition to civilian life.
