ST. LOUIS • Dozens of organizations and businesses in Missouri and Illinois were among those in eight states that took part in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut at 10:15 a.m. today.
This second annual event is a region-wide earthquake drill in which participants simultaneously practice these recommended actions during an earthquake:
• Drop to the ground
• Take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
• Hold on to it until the shaking stops.
Scientists estimate a 25 to 40 percent probability of a damaging earthquake occurring in the central U.S. within the next 50 years. The ShakeOut is designed to help communities get ready.
Other states involved in this event are Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
