100 Neediest Cases

For generations, the 100 Neediest Cases campaign has helped thousands of disadvantaged families during the holidays. The tradition dates to 1922, when civic leaders formed the Christmas Bureau.

To adopt a case or donate, call 314-421-6060 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, visit www.100neediestcases.org, or mail a check to P.O. Box 955925, St. Louis, Mo. 63195.

CASE 4

Mary, 83, a widow with diabetes and high blood pressure, raised three grandchildren from the same home she has occupied for 45 years. She lives with one adult daughter, who is unemployed. The home's decades-old wiring and construction pose hazards, with no money for repairs. A ceiling that fell down in the kitchen more than a year ago has been temporarily patched with plywood, and the roof needs to be replaced. Rain runs into pots and pans on the floor and counters. Several of the rooms are dark and cold as many of the electric outlets and light fixtures don't work. Paying for utilities is a constant struggle, and the gas is currently cut off. After trying to stretch her $833 monthly Social Security income, there is little money for food. This year, while out walking, Mary was mugged by thieves who took her groceries. She would appreciate help paying for home repairs and utility bills.

CASE 5

B is one of the most resourceful mothers her caseworker has seen. She consistently stresses the importance of her children getting an education so that "they can have a better chance than me." B knows where all the food pantries and clothing drives are. She stays alert for openings in better Section 8 housing, and gets references from government agencies to get supplies like used computers to help her children with school. B's youngest child recently entered middle school and she was looking forward to a more relaxed way of life. Then B was diagnosed with cancer. She resisted getting treatment because she was scared what it would mean for her ability to care for her children. She finally relented and began treatments just recently. B would love to give her children a nice Christmas.
