ST. CHARLES COUNTY • A teenage driver from north St. Louis County was killed Wednesday night when he hit the back of a tractor-trailer that had slowed in front of him on Highway 67, police say.

The victim is identified as Hamza J. Hamdan, 18, of the 2400 block of West Wedgewood Drive in St. Louis County. He died at a hospital less than an hour after the 6:10 p.m. crash Wednesday.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said Hamdan was driving a 1996 Cadillac Eldorado Touring Coupe north on Highway 67 near West Alton in eastern St. Charles County. He was in the left lane, behind a 1995 Freightliner truck driven by Dale W. Mennemeier.

The patrol says Mennemeier slowed his truck onto the left shoulder so he could make a left turn. That's when Hamdan's car struck the back of the truck.

Hamdan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken by medical helicopter to Alton Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday.

Mennemeier, 45, of West Alton, was uninjured, the patrol said.
