ST. CHARLES COUNTY > Bill on bicycling ban won't get quick vote • The sponsor of a proposal to ban bicycling on two-lane highways lacking shoulders in southwest St. Charles County said Monday night that he won't press for a quick decision on the issue. Councilman Joe Brazil, R-Defiance, delayed his bill after the council heard from a string of supporters and opponents. Backers such as Marc Gottfried of Defiance said bicyclists pose a safety hazard for drivers and themselves and should instead use the Katy Trail in the same area. Opponents such as Patti Vineyard, executive director of the St. Louis Regional Bicycle Federation, argued that the county doesn't have authority to impose a ban on a state road. She said alternatives such as lower speeds should be considered. Councilman Jerry Daugherty, D-Portage des Sioux, asked that the bill be amended to extend the proposed ban to some narrow highways in the county's northeast corner.
