ST. CHARLES COUNTY - An 18-year-old riding his bicycle was seriously injured after being struck by a trash truck this afternoon in St. Charles County, authorities said.
Joshua Sabala, 18, of St. Charles County, was hit about 12:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Riverview Lane just west of Highway 94. He was flown by helicopter to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur.
Sheriff's Lt. Dave Tiefenbrunn said it appears Sabala rode into the path of the Allied Waste Services truck.
The truck dragged the bicycle at least 50 feet and became stuck underneath. Authorities said the crash was not the driver's fault. The driver, 35, remained at the scene and spoke to investigators.
"There was really nothing he could do," Tiefenbrunn said.
A hospital spokeswoman said Sabala was in satisfactory condition.
In an unrelated crash in St. Peters today, a motorcyclist was rear-ended in the eastbound lanes of Highway 94 at Kisker Road about 10:35 a.m., police said.
John Poffenbarger, 65, of Washington, Mo., was in critical condition this afternoon after the 41-year-old driver of a 2011 Toyota Camry failed to slow down at Kisker Road and struck the 2010 Triumph motorcycle.
Poffenbarger was flown to St. John's Mercy Medical Center as well.
