ST. CHARLES  •   A St. Charles man has been charged with second-degree murder and domestic assault stemming from an attack in May that resulted in his girlfriend's death.

Steven Jon Martineau, 48, of the 400 block of Tower Grove Place, is being held in the St. Charles County Jail on $50,000 cash-only bail.

Police and paramedics were called to Martineau's residence on May 26, according to authorities. His girlfriend, Linda Cerutti, 50, was found lying on the floor of the kitchen, unconscious and unresponsive with dried blood coming from her mouth and nose.

Cerutti was taken to a hospital, but she never regained consciousness. She died on June 10.

Police said that Martineau and Cerutti argued earlier that day and it escalated into a physical altercation.

The investigation also revealed that Cerutti had been the victim of domestic assault in late February. According to court documents, on Feb. 26 Martineau struck her twice in the face because she stayed out until the early morning hours. She did not file a police report regarding that incident.

Martineau has been held since May on misdemeanor assault charges in the February incident. He also was being held on a warrant from Michigan involving child support charges.

The upgraded charges were filed against Martineau Friday.
