WENTZVILLE   •   A 34-year-old Wentzville woman faces felony child abuse charges in connection with the April death of her 14-month-old son, authorities said.

A grand jury indictment issued against Stacy Michelle Yeager, of the 400 block of Kent Drive, accuses her of striking her son, Elijah Yeager, in the head, causing trauma resulting in his death.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar said the boy was found unresponsive April 22 and died April 26 at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Lohmar said the indictment, issued Friday, says Yeager knowingly or recklessly caused serious physical injury to the boy.

He said Medical Examiner Mary Case determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Lohmar said there also were other bruises and injuries consistent with child abuse.

Lohmar said Yeager was being held Tuesday in the St. Charles County Jail. He said cash-only bail was set at $300,000.

The indictment  also alleges that Yeager knowingly placed the child in the care of his reputed father despite knowing that the man has a criminal record, has committed "severe domestic violence" and is a drug user.

The indictment also said the defendant allowed the man to stay in her home in violation of a family court order.  She also is accused of giving first responders false information on how Elijah was bruised and on who was present when the child went into cardiac arrest.

Lohmar said the investigation is continuing.
