CASE 35
Mrs. A, a mother of four with one on the way, knows firsthand what the stress of a bad economy can do to a family. Her husband and father of her four children ran away rather than face the responsibilities. She was lucky enough to find a man who helped her with her family — he's the father of the unborn child. But he lost his job and resorted to crime to generate money for the family. He's in prison now. She works part time but needs help. Her rent, utilities and expenses eat up her monthly check of $892 and her food stamps. The 26-year-old mom, and her children, 1 to 7 years old, are struggling to make it through the winter. They're in need of help with utilities, clothing and rent. She'll accept food or clothing gift certificates or pre-owned clothing.
CASE 36
Ms. D struggles with numerous health problems including high blood pressure, a thyroid disorder, depression and dementia. The 77-year-old woman has a hard time with the daily tasks of living, including eating and bathing, and requires several medications to control her health conditions. She has a health aide who visits her for five hours a day. Ms. D also enjoys the company of several friends who are able to take her to church, her doctor appointments and shopping, but she doesn't have any local family members who are able to help. Ms. D would appreciate any help with her doctor bills, or gift certificates for food because she requires a special diet.
