Feeding Africa
Scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Creve Coeur are trying to genetically modify cassava, a crop with no market potential that could help solve hunger in the developing world. Reporter Eric Hand and photographer Dawn Majors of the Post-Dispatch spent three weeks in Africa this summer trying to understand the importance of cassava in urban and rural life.
2006 Storms
Two separate storms -- July 19 and July 21 -- plunged much of the St. Louis area into darkness. For some, the outages lasted a week or more, and hot weather added to their feeling of powerlessness. Read all about the storms and their aftermath here.
Abuse
A Post-Dispatch investigation has found abuse and neglect of mentally retarded and mentally ill residents in state centers and in private facilities the state supervises. Since 2000, there have been more than 2,000 confirmed cases of abuse and neglect with 665 injuries and 21 deaths.
Organ Donors
Increasingly, organs for transplants are being donated by living people. A yearlong investigation shows that people inside and outside of medicine think not enough safeguards are in place to protect living donors.

Business
Top Executive's Pay
Some investors and analysts question the big paychecks given to the people in the corner offices. Others say leaders of big companies face tough jobs filled with big decisions and big responsibilities. Find out what your bosses earn in this STLtoday special report.
Annual Company Report
The Post-Dispatch Annual Company Report is a guide to the region's leading companies. The scoring system ranks companies on four variables: revenue, return on average equity, revenue change and profit change. The rankings were added up and divided by four to calculate a score. The lower the score, the higher a company ranks.
