It was a particularly bloody weekend on Missouri highways.

From 10 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday, the Missouri Highway Patrol responded to accidents that killed 10 people in nine counties.

The victims included a 5-year-old Kansas boy killed when a car ran a stop sign, and an 87-year-old man who turned into the path of another car. A pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver along Interstate 70, and a bicyclist was hit by a truck in Jasper County. Only one accident claimed more than one life.

The only incident in the St. Louis area happened Saturday in  Franklin County. Zachary T. Bayer, 32, of Robertsville, Mo., died when the car he was driving skidded off Route HH and overturned early Saturday. The wreck was detected about 5:50 a.m. Saturday. Police couldn't pinpoint the time he crashed except to say it happened sometime aftger midnight Friday.

These are just the fatalities worked by the Highway Patrol. By way of comparison, the patrol put out statistics from the recent Fourth of July weekend for traffic fatalities.

For that holiday weekend, from 6 p.m. July 2 through 11:59 p.m. July 5, 12 people died in traffic crashes in Missouri. Half of those were crashes handled by the patrol; the rest were handled by local police agencies.

Capt. Tim Hull of the Missouri Highway Patrol said the weekend's count is high and noted that it only takes into account those wrecks worked by the patrol troopers. Fatal crashes handled by other agencies aren't included in this count.

"Ten is way too many," Hull said. "Any given weekend, it can fluctuate like that. We had rainstorms Sunday morning in the central part of the state. The rest were pretty well spread out."

In addition to Saturday's crash that killed Bayer in Franklin County, here is a breakdown of the weekend's other fatal crashes:

* 10:30 p.m. Friday, Saline County -- Aaron Smith, 27, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking along Interstate 70, about two miles east of Route VV. Police say the driver took off. Investigators have no description of the vehicle.

* 11 p.m. Friday, Cole County -- Two men from Jefferson City died in a head-on crash on Route J. The victims were Kevin D. Matheson, 30, and Charles Dyson Jr., 36. Police say Dyson's car crossed the center line and collided with Matheson's car. Both men died at the scene.

* 8:55 a.m. Saturday, Greene County -- Lawrence Harless, 87, of Springfield, Mo., died when he pulled into the path of a car on U.S. Highway 160, about a mile south of Springfield.

* 9:38 a.m. Saturday, Jasper County -- Larry  Jones, 46, of Carl Junction, Mo., was riding a Trek bicycle when a pickup came up behind and hit him on Ivy Road in southwest Missouri's Jasper County. Police say the driver of the pickup failed to see the bike.

* 6:20 p.m. Saturday, Clay County -- Darren Derks, 44, of Kansas City, Mo., was killed when the car he was driving ran off the road at Stockdale and N.E. 102nd street and overturned. He and his passenger were thrown from the car; the passenger was seriously injured. Police say Derks had been passing illegally when the car ran off the road at a curve.

* 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Macon County -- Darrin Imbler, 31, of Kirksville, Mo., was driving on U.S. Highway 63 when he crashed about a mile south of Macon, Mo. Police say his car had crossed the centerline, ran off the road, struck a ditch and a mailbox and a buried cable box. The car veered down an embankment and overturned. Imbler was thrown from the car.

* 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Buchanan County -- Justin L. Martin, 25, of Rushville, Mo., was killed on a dirt bike on Southwest Bluff Road, about four miles south of St. Joseph, Mo. Police say Martin was operating a Yamaha TTR125 north in the southbound lane and was hit by a southbound Jeep. Martin was not wearing a helmet, the patrol says.

* 6:26 p.m. Sunday, Newton County -- Andre Gracey, 5, of Wichita, Kan., died in a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 60, about two miles east of Neosho, Mo. Eight other people were injured, four of them seriously. The patrol says a car ran a stop sign and pulled into the path of the car in which Andre was a passenger. Both cars went down an embankment. Andre died at the scene. The driver of the car that ran the stop sign was identified as Charlie Litchfield, 29, of Granby, Mo. He was being tested for alcohol.
