Country Club Hills is the second local city to use a speed camera on its streets.

Police Chief Cliff Ware said the city has begun a six-month trial of camera enforcement. Speeders caught so far by the portable speed camera since Monday will receive warnings. But starting this Thursday, motorists who drive aggressively and exceed posted speeds will receive a $100 ticket in the mail.

Although the camera can be moved throughout the city, Ware said the enforcement will be focused initially on Lucas & Hunt Road. City officials say speeding is commonplace on Lucas & Hunt and there has been a fatal accident within the past year.

"With the economic situation that we are all facing, we will have to decrease our numbers in the police department," Ware said. "We won't even be able to have a car sitting out there running radar as often as I would like."

Earlier this year, St. Ann placed a speed camera on an Ashby Road school zone. Charlack drew criticism when it announced a camera of its own on a short stretch of Interstate 170.

Critics have questioned whether speed cameras are really being deployed to generate traffic fine revenues.

St. Ann Police Chief said the Ashby Road camera has forced drivers to change their habits by slowing down.

Country Club Hills Mayor David Powell Sr. said he tried to have a stop light installed on Lucas & Hunt but was unsuccessful. That's why the city is trying the speed camera.
