Columbia, Mo. – After asuccessful 2008 debut featuring screenings of many celebrated films, includingtwo Oscar-nominated films, an Emmy-award winner, and Sundance Film FestivalGrand Jury Prize winners, the 2009 Citizen Jane Film Festival promises todeliver again an intimate yet empowering experience.
Following the standardset last year, this year’s festival, to be held Oct. 16-18 in Columbia, Mo.,will again include panel discussions, workshops, live music events andperformances, in addition to screenings introduced by filmmakers and followedby lively Q-and-A sessions.
The Citizen Jane Film Festival, hosted by Stephens College, thesecond-oldest women’s college in the nation, is an annual event created tosupport and celebrate some of the most daring, accomplished and interestingwork by women filmmakers. The festival also exists to help carve strong,non-stereotypical roles for women in the film industry, both in front of andbehind the camera. The mission of the festival is especially crucial in lightof the consistent and sore underrepresentation of women in powerful roleswithin the industry. According to the most recent Celluloid Ceiling Report,women accounted for only 9 percent of directors in 2008, a percentage thathasn’t changed in 10 years.
