Magdalen Players to present "Anything Goes"
Southtown theater group thrives after 25 years, many changes
The Magdalen Players thrive on change. And they'll prove it with performances of the Cole Porter musical "Anything Goes" on Nov. 7, 8 and 9. The production will be the south side theater group's 25th at the Magdalen Parish Center, 4354 S. Kingshighway.
The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door. Group rates are available.
The Magdalen Players started in 1983 as way for members of St. Mary Magdalen parish and children at the parish school to express their creativity, as well as raise funds to maintain the Magdalen Parish Center, said Kathy Schneider, one of the founding members of the group and a producer of this year's show.
Despite changes all around them, including an influx of immigrants to the neighborhood, the closing of older businesses and opening of new ones and the consolidation of the St. Mary Magdalen grade school with Our Lady of Sorrows school, the Magdalen Players have not only survived, but thrived.
"We're here and we're still kicking," Schneider said. "Early on, the group decided that we wanted to provide quality, family-oriented shows. Over the years, we've gained a reputation, and people come from all over St. Louis to try out for our shows."
