Trailnet, Inc. has been awarded a Community Action Grant of $4000, presented by the American Heart Association's Greater St. Louis Division, for their Safe Routes to School Program.
The Safe Routes to School Program promotes healthy non-motorized alternatives for K-5 elementary students to get to school including walking, biking or using wheelchairs. One of the goals of the program is to address ways to improve cardiovascular heath by promoting healthy living early in life. The program is currently being implemented in three local communities.
The Community Action Grants are a part of $200,000 given by the Midwest Affiliate of the American Heart Association to improve the cardiovascular health of the communities they serve and advance the goal to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010.
Grants were funded in communities across an 11 state affiliate which include: Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and North and South Dakotas. All grant recipients met the goals and mission of the American Heart Association strategic plan and focus on areas such as Women and Heart Disease, Cultural Health Initiatives, Stroke Prevention and Education, Childhood Obesity, Physical Activity and Grassroots Advocacy.
