The Washington Nationals put prized rookie righthander Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. The move is retroactive to July 22.
It's the first trip to the DL for Strasburg, 5-2 with a 2.32 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 15 walks in 54 1/3 innings since making his debut for the Nationals on June 8.
Padres acquire Tejada from Orioles • The San Diego Padres obtained infielder Miguel Tejada and cash from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Class AA pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Tejada is hitting .269 with seven homers and 39 RBIs.
Marlins send Cantu to Rangers • The Texas Rangers acquired third baseman Jorge Cantu, hitting .262 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs this season, from the Florida Marlins for Class AA pitchers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda.
Showalter is Orioles' new manager • Baltimore hired Buck Showalter, whose last year as a manager was in 2006 with Texas, to be its skipper. Showalter replaces Juan Samuel, who had the job on an interim basis after Dave Trembley was fired last month.
Sheets plans to have surgery • Oakland Athletics righthander Ben Sheets said he will have surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his throwing elbow, but it won't be this season.
Kinsler goes on DL • The Texas Rangers placed All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler, who played at Missouri, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.
