Brewers rally to defeat Reds

Pinch-hitter Jim Edmonds homered with 2 outs in the 8th after just missing a go-ahead shot on the previous pitch, and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to edge the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Monday night for their 5th victory in a row.

Cubs 5, Astros 2 • Geovany Soto drove in 2 runs and Alfonso Soriano had 2 doubles and an RBI to help Chicago defeat Houston.

Phillies 5, Rockies 4 • Brian Schneider hit a 2-run triple to help Philadelphia win its 5th game in a row.

AL

Yankees 3, Indians 2 • Curtis Granderson hit a 2-run homer to propel New York past Cleveland.

The Yankees' Alex Rodriguez, trying to become the seventh player to reach the 600-homer milestone, stayed stuck on 599 when he went 0 for 4.

Twins 19, Royals 1 • Joe Mauer had 5hits and a career-best 7 RBIs and Danny Valencia went 4 for 4 with a grand slam for his first major league home run, leading Minnesota to a rout.

White Sox 6, Mariners 1 • John Danks pitched 8 solid innings to win his 4th consecutive start, and Juan Pierre and Alexei Ramirez each had 3 hits in Chicago's win.

Blue Jays 9, Orioles 5 • Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 28th home run, Aaron Hill and Adam Lind also connected and Toronto defeated Baltimore.

Haren hit by liner • Dan Haren, acquired by the Angels in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, left his first start for Los Angeles in the fifth inning after a line drive by Boston's Kevin Youkilis hit him in the right forearm. Haren, who had 8 strikeouts before the injury, dropped to his knees in pain, and trainers ushered him off the field. The team says he suffered a bruised forearm and will be re-examined Tuesday.

Zambrano apologizes for outburst • Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano apologized on national television for his dugout tirade last month during a TV interview.

He was suspended for three games and placed on the restricted list on June 29 with a mandate that he seek anger management counseling after the incident.

The Cubs' former ace has been on an assignment with Class AAA Iowa and is expected to pitch out of the bullpen when he rejoins the major league club.

Wigginton's penalty reduced • Baltimore Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton, originally suspended three games by Major League Baseball for making contact with umpire Gary Darling while arguing a call during last Thursday's 5-0 home loss to the Minnesota Twins, had the suspension cut to two games after he agreed to drop an appeal.
