One of the oldest trick plays in baseball is now a balk. Under a rule change imposed by Major League Baseball, pitchers will no longer be allowed to fake a pickoff to third base and throw to first as a way to dupe a runner on first base into breaking for second. Next season, that move would be a balk. Pitchers still can step off the rubber and fake to third.

Royals claim catcher Kottaras • Kansas City claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. The 29-year-old Kottaras, who will compete for a backup job, has hit .220 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs in 249 career games with the Red Sox, Brewers and Athletics.

Rodriguez may miss season • Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it’s possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez, 37, could miss the entire season while recovering from surgery last week on his hip. The team initially said the rehabilitation time was expected to be six months.

White Sox set deal with Lindstrom • Chicago has agreed to a one-year contract with reliever Matt Lindstrom that includes a club option for 2014. Lindstrom, 32, will receive $2.3 million next year. The White Sox can then pay him $4 million in 2014 or buy him out for $500,000. The righthander was 1-0 with a 2.68 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 46 games last season.
