David Freese leaves the field

Already on the disabled list with an injury to his right foot, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese dropped a weight on his left foot that could prolong his absence from the lineup.

Freese fractured the big toe on his left foot, manager Tony La Russa told the media after Monday's 8-4 victory.

The manager added that he's not sure whether the busted toe will keep him out longer than his already injured right ankle. Freese isn't expected back in the major-league lineup for at least a couple more weeks.

It's possible, said club officials, that the two injuries would heal concurrently.

"When he was working out, he dropped a (weight) plate on his toe," La Russa said. "They're saying it may not be any longer than his ankle. I don't really know except now he has that to deal with as well."
