NEWS Q&A

Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn was scheduled for surgery Tuesday to remove a new cancerous tumor inside his right cheek. Gwynn, now San Diego State's baseball coach, previously had a malignant growth removed from the same spot in 2010. Gwynn's wife, Alicia, told ESPN that doctors do not believe the cancer has spread from his salivary gland. Gwynn, 51, had blamed the original growth on his use of smokeless tobacco.

He played his whole 20-season big-league career with San Diego and the outfielder had a .338 lifetime batting average and 3,141 hits.

Orioles • The team no longer is interested in free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez, Orioles vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said. Ramirez, 39, retired last season rather than serve a suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy. He will be suspended for 50 games if he signs with a big-league club.

White Sox • The club agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, a deal that guarantees him $1 million. Fukudome joined the cross-town rival Cubs for the 2008 season with a $48 million, four-year contract. He was traded from the Cubs to Cleveland last July and has a .260 average in the majors with 42 homers and 191 RBIs.
