JUPITER, Fla. • As mentioned yesterday on Cardinal Beat, new Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is, in his words, "big on quotes."

He highlights them. He jots them in the margins. He keeps them handy. He's going to apply at least two decals on his office at Busch Stadium with favorite quotes -- one on each wall that is in his direct line of sight. (Under the one that will read "Good is the enemy of great," Matheny plans on putting a picture of every living Cardinals Hall of Famer. He already has the Stan Musial picture picked out.)

Matheny also likes to share them.

The new manager plans to include a quote on every workout sheet this spring. On the first two days it has been located at the bottom, and in the clubhouse it is posted and printed in red. The Day 1 quote came from former president George W. Bush and it was about service, something that Matheny stressed by way of "respect" in his first talk with the team. He has set up veterans with the young players in the "service" of "passing something on" to the younger players.

Today's quote comes from a longtime Cardinals coach, one of the officials once described alongside George Kissell as the "College of Cardinals" instructors. It reads:

"If you are not willing to out work and out think everyone on the field, you might want to find another job."

-- Dave Ricketts

The original source of the quote is not readily available by doing a Google search. Nor does it appear if you do a search through the Post-Dispatch archives.

"The source for that," Matheny said, "came right over there."

Matheny then pointed over toward the batting cages here at the Cardinals' complex at Roger Dean Stadium. Matheny was a player for the Cardinals and trying to establish his hold on the catching job when Ricketts told him that exact phrase during a spring training workout.

Ricketts died in 2008 after a long battle with cancer. Ricketts played catcher for the Cardinals in the 1960s, and he was on the 1967 World Series team. He became a coach after his playing days, spending some time in the majors, and then in 1991 he became a minor-league catching instructor for the Cardinals. There is an entire generation of Cardinals catchers who were influenced by Ricketts. Yadier Molina once described Ricketts as "like my dad."

Matheny has described how he'll draw many things from the coaches who influenced him, from Bill Freehan at Michigan to Ricketts with the Cardinals. For Day 2, he thought a quote fit.

If there's interest in hearing the quotes and what origins I can dig up throughout this spring I can continue dropping these entries in each day.
