KANSAS CITY -- The St. Louis Cardinals have an agreement in place with lefty reliever Renyel Pinto, who was recently released by the Florida Marlins. The deal won't be finalized until Pinto passes a physical with the club in the near future.

Pinto was released by the Marlins earlier this week after posting a 2.70 ERA in 20 games. He struck out 16 in 16 2/3 innings and walked nine.

The 27-year-old lefty held righthanded batters to a .190 average with a .238 slugging percentage this season. Lefties hit .364 against him with a .519 slugging percentage.

If he passes the physical, Pinto will go to Class AAA Memphis and serve as the next-lefty-up on the depth chart behind the Cardinals two major-league relievers -- Trever Miller and Dennys Reyes.
