Free agent starter Edwin Jackson has agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals, leaving the Cardinals with five of the first 58 picks in this year's amateur draft.
Jackson, considered the second-most attractive starting pitcher on this winter's market, is believed to have accepted a deal worth about $10 million after failing to find a multi-year proposal to his liking.
Jackson's "pillow contract" allows him to re-enter free agency after next season, barring an extension with the Nats.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, remain attuned to remaining free agent starter Roy Oswalt, who is also likely to accept a one-year deal but for less dollars than Jackson.
The Cardinals currently project a payroll of about $113.6 million for their Opening Day roster, including prospect Zack Cox's major-league contract.
The club remains interested in moving reliever Kyle McClellan and his $2.5 million contract but has so far had trouble cultivating a market. Should Oswalt sign with the Texas Rangers, the defending American League champions and the Nationals could also offer starting pitchers for trade. McClellan's value is derived from his versatility, as he started for the Cardinals through last season's All-Star break.
The Cardinals now project control over the Nos. 19, 23, 36, 52 and 58 selections in this year's draft.
